frequently asked questions
Easily the most common question that we get asked. The simple reason is that the roof lining material is backed with foam, over time with the harsh Australian sun shining down on your roof, this causes the foam to dry out and become brittle. The foam begins to let go from the roof lining panel installed in your car and the roof lining begins to sag and hang down.
Due to the reason the fact that it’s the foam breaking down more so than the glue, it’s really not possible to “neatly” fix your own roof lining. You can by all means buy some spray on adhesive glue and give it a try yourself but keep in mind that this probably won’t work and will in fact make it more difficult and more costly to replace the roof lining when you come in to see us.
First of all we remove the roof lining panel from your vehicle, this involves us removing all pillar plastics, grab handles, interior lights etc. We then carefully manoeuvre the roof lining panel out of the vehicle. The old roof lining material is removed and all excess foam is scraped from the roof lining panel. The new material is cut to size and both the material and roof lining are sprayed with a long lasting contact adhesive which bonds to itself. The material is carefully laid onto the roof lining panel and smoothed out, holes are cut for interior lights, grab handles and mounting fasteners. The roof lining panel is then carefully re-installed back into your vehicle and all accessories are refitted and tested.
Most standard roof linings for common sedans, hatches and wagons will take between 2-3 hours to replace. Please be advised that most European vehicles and those vehicles with sunroofs will take longer than this as the process of removal and installation takes much longer.
You certainly can, we keep most basic roof linings colours including grey, black and beige in stock. Keep in mind though that other interior components like pillar plastics, grab handles etc may look out of place if they the colour is changed.
We can, we’ve completed many custom roof linings in street and show cars. We quite often fit suede to roof linings and then retrim the pillar plastics and have the grab handles colour coded to match. Keep in mind that this process will need to be quoted on and will take longer than a normal roof lining to complete.
It definitely can be. The process does take a little longer to replace and in some cases we will also need to replace the sunroof roof lining panel to make sure that the material matches but it’s roof linings like these that we excel at.
